APRS is a registered trademark of APRS Software and Bob Bruninga, WB4APR.
The idea behind APRS is that all radio amateurs monitor a single frequency and know the radio activity in the area they are at. APRS stands for Automatic Packet Reporting System and sends packets of data on the frequency. For region 1 the APRS frequency is 144.800 MHz.
Everyone is welcome to setup an APRS station and use the APRS network but since everyone is on the same frequency attention is required on the frequency of the packets sent, so that they don`t collide or keep the frequency busy and the number of hops used so that the beacons stay within the desired range that others can contact him and not flood far away stations for no reason.
Through APRS you can exchange messages to specific callsigns , read or send bulletins and announcements with no specific recepient so everyone in the range will see it ,for example a club meeting or an earthquake. here is the difference between the bulletin and the announcement. Bulletins are sent a few times an hour for a few hours, and announcements less frequently but possibly over a few days. You can get weather information, or send or see Objects on the map.
